The 5th generation of mobile networks (5G) has arrived in Greece, bringing the potential to transform a wide range of industries, including television production.
For Telmaco, the advent of 5G presented another opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities, proving in practice that the successful integration of modern technologies leads to a new era of services and products.
Cosmote TV entrusted Telmaco with the first live broadcast using a system that combines 5G, IP, HD/UHD, and SST streaming technologies.
Leveraging the appropriate applications, Telmaco enabled the first live television production to utilize a 5G network during the recent Greek Cup football final between Olympiakos and PAOK.
The new streaming standards, along with the high bandwidth and low latency of Cosmote’s 5G network, create unprecedented conditions for TV production.
Telmaco’s solutions reduce the complexity of implementing these technologies and simplify remote production.
In this case, Telmaco managed the live production of four remote cameras from the existing control room.
For the implementation, Telmaco used the following equipment:
- AIR320-5G unit by AVIWEST
- BirdDog UHD P400 robotic cameras
- Cosmote 5G network for remote operation
- StreamHub unit for synchronization, communication, and decoding of sources in the control room
All devices were connected via a custom-designed IP network, enabling the return of video, tally signals, and remote camera control from the control room to the production site wirelessly.
This system is highly versatile and can be applied to a variety of productions, including news, interviews, music shows, live events, and small-scale sports events.
The chosen solution delivers modern signals while maintaining lip-sync between camera operators, and it preserves the high image quality of the UHD P400 cameras, leveraging the extremely high speeds of Cosmote’s 5G network. Moreover, the network’s ultra-low latency enables precise control of robotic cameras, enhancing production capabilities. You can view the equipment in action via this video link.
