In early June, a new exhibition opened its doors in Bordeaux, France: Bassins de Lumières. Since its launch, more than 300,000 visitors have explored the art of Gustav Klimt and Paul Klee in a truly unexpected setting—inside a former World War II submarine base.
This immersive digital art experience—re-created by artists working with digital technologies—is brought to life by more than 100 Barco laser projectors, delivering a visually stunning spectacle.
The exhibition is the result of the recently renewed partnership between Barco and Culturespaces, a key player in Europe’s cultural landscape.
For many years, Culturespaces has relied on Barco projection systems to create digital art centers, and Bassins de Lumières is the first installation since the partnership renewal in December 2019.
“Bassins de Lumières offers a completely unique sensory experience, combining projected video, light, and sound,” says Augustin de Cointet de Fillain, Director of Bassins de Lumières and Culturespaces Digital. “The location, the reimagined works of Klimt and Klee, and the unparalleled image quality of Barco projectors make this exhibition an unprecedented experience.”
Within the massive submarine base—featuring 14,000 m² of projection surface—the installation includes:
- 72 × Barco F80-Q12 projectors
- 27 × Barco G60-W10 projectors
- 3 × Barco UDX-W32 projectors
All systems are laser projectors.
In December 2019, Culturespaces renewed its collaboration with Barco as exclusive projection technology partner for current and future projects for the next three years.
The agreement includes the delivery of 168 new laser projectors and a full-service maintenance contract covering all Barco equipment.
